This 👏
When it comes down to it - exploring all the things you 'could' do - and narrowing it down to what you 'should' do - is what good strategy is all about.
You know when you’re in those meetings with everyone saying we could do this, we could do that!? And you end up with a long list of things you could do (cool), but absolutely zero clarity on what you actually should do? (Not cool).
It can lead to overwhelm for leaders - and a business (and expensive resources) going around in circles, not getting anywhere fast.
For many businesses, the problem isn’t a lack of ideas. The list of things you "could" do - is never ending, knowing where to focus your resources (budget, energy, focus, hours in a day, attention, remaining brain cells) is the most important thing you can do - for business and your brand.
The strategic challenge is, of course, working out which ideas deserve your focus and energy (time, money, attention). Here creativity and critical thinking collide - and that is These Guys I Know sweet spot.
That shift - from could to should - is where real strategy lives. It’s why many leaders join new businesses and quickly observe “we’re trying to do too much, let’s do a few things well!”
These Guys I Know work strategically to refine that long list of what you ‘could do’ into actionable areas of what you ‘should do’ - to drive real outcomes and results for your business.
To do that, we use a number of tools - including the Impact vs Effort Matrix. An oldie but a goodie. This tool maps every idea against two axes - how much impact it could make, and how much effort it will take. It helps you sort fast:
Quick Wins – High impact, low effort → We do these first.
Major Projects – High impact, high effort → We spend time planning and developing
Fill-ins – Low impact, low effort → Perhaps, if we have some down time.
Time Wasters – Low impact, high effort → Ummm, no.
Trick : When we’re working with clients - we make sure we identify some quick wins and low hanging fruit - the areas we can make a fast and immediate impact, this keeps our client happy, creating a sense of momentum and achievement - whilst we are working away on those bigger pieces of work that take longer and produce fruit a little slower, but are worth the effort. What is your low hanging fruit?
